Bedfordshire Police shoot man dead in Luton

Yesterday it was reported that a man had died after being shot by a firearms officer during an incident in Luton, Bedfordshire.

Bedfordshire Police said specialist armed officers had been responding to reports that a woman had been assaulted. The 24-year-old man who was shot received medical treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), has begun an investigation.

Jocelyn Cockburn, civil liberties partner at Hodge Jones & Allen is currently representing the families of three men who died whilst in the custody of Bedfordshire Police.

She comments: “This fatal shooting is the latest in a number of fatal incidents involving Bedfordshire Police in recent years and requires a thorough investigation by the IPCC. It is now emerging that some police officers were wearing cameras at the time, so it is hoped this will aid the work of the IPCC team. It is vital that in cases like these the families of the victim are able to gain a understanding of what has happened to their loved one and that the circumstances surrounding the death are fully investigated.”
