Mechanical Grab Incident In Garden Causes Complex And Life Changing Injuries To Man’s Hand
Our client was assisting with works being carried out at a family member’s home. A grab machine had been hired to clear away the rubble. The driver asked our client to hold onto a large bag full of rubble and he would use the mechanical grab to pick it up. Without warning, the driver directed the grab down onto the bag of rubble – our client attempted to pull his hand away but the jaws of the grabber crushed his right hand. He sustained significant and life-changing injuries to his hand. He was in hospital for 6 weeks and required 5 different surgical procedures to his hand and skin graft. The crush injury left him with permanent disablement.
The case settled for in excess of £1m shortly after a joint settlement meeting with the Defendant’s representatives. Counsel for the Claimant was Lionel Stride at Temple Garden Chambers.
The case was handled by Ken Brough, Partner and Catastrophic Injury Solicitor. Commenting on the case, Ken said, “This incident only took moments to happen but had devastating consequences for my client, both physically and mentally. Risk assessments are key to any major work undertaken, not only on building sites, but at home too.”
