How do I make a compensation claim for mesothelioma and asbestos exposure?

What should I do if I have been diagnosed with mesothelioma?
After contacting a medical professional, it is important to get early legal advice and support. The condition will require ongoing treatment and there are a number of local support groups in regions around the country that can help. The London Asbestos Support Awareness Group (LASAG) is an independent charity set up to assist patients and families affected by asbestos disease across London and the south east.
There are some asbestos websites that look like charities but are in fact claims management companies. Read the small print, legal notice at the bottom of the website to see who they actually are.

What is asbestos exposure?
Asbestos is a type of insulation material that was frequently used in building works across the UK until the late 1990s. When asbestos is disturbed, such as during building works or housing repairs, it can release fine dust particles that are hazardous to inhale.
Long-term exposure to asbestos dust can have harmful effects on the human respiratory system and can cause permanent, and often fatal, damage to the lungs. Exposure has also been proven to cause several long-term illnesses, including the lung cancer mesothelioma.
Although the dangers of asbestos have been known in the UK since the 1930s, many employers failed to warn or provide protection for their workers. However, new use of asbestos was finally banned in this country in 1999.
People working in the following industries may be at risk of asbestos exposure:
- Building/construction
- Ship manufacturers
- Manufacturing of household appliances
- Motor manufacturing
- Power stations and energy providers
- Telecommunications
What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that usually develops in the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma) but can also affect the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma) and the lining of the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).
The main cause of it is the exposure to asbestos dust which gets into the lungs and develops into one of the forms of mesothelioma.
The symptoms of mesothelioma can include the following:
- Shortness of breath
- Tiredness
- Chest pain
- Persistent cough
- Sweating and high temperatures
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Pain or swelling in the abdomen
- Feeling sick
- Diarrhoea or constipation
I cannot remember exactly when I was exposed to asbestos as it was decades ago – is that a problem?
Not necessarily. Our specialist lawyers have extensive knowledge about how asbestos materials were used in the past. We will thoroughly investigate all possible sources of your exposure to asbestos dust in your employment or elsewhere. We will obtain relevant records and try to obtain witnesses to support your claim.
The employers who exposed me to asbestos are no longer in business, can I still pursue a claim?
This is a common problem but even if the company no longer exists, it is often possible to trace their insurers. We have an excellent track record of tracing the relevant insurers who will then deal with the claim. In a case of mesothelioma where neither the former employer nor their insurers can be traced, a claim can be made to the Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme. We will prepare and submit this application for you.
How much will it cost me?
Most cases can be dealt with under a “no win, no fee” agreement. This means there is no financial risk to you in making a compensation claim. We don’t make any deductions for legal costs or expenses from the compensation awarded.
How long will my claim take?
